Haitian Architecture

This reason for this post is because I was thinking about architecture and I was wondering what type of architecture does Haiti truly have.  I never would of imagined finding images like these.  Just because most people think of Haiti of not having much or mostly destruction from the Earthquake in reality there is a lot of architecture and beauty there.  Check of the pictures below!  Some people use materials that are out of the norm to build with and then you see some goegous architecture from haitiancreation that i would of never thought existed!!!!!!!!!! :)

My love for Haiti just rose to the next level! :)

Here’s a great article from last week’s Wall Street Journal about unique architectural solutions in Haiti:
Solving Haiti’s Housing Problems with Old Tires, Bottles – Developments – WSJ
Building affordable, sustainable housing that is earthquake/hurricane resistant and uses only recycled materials? Yes, please. And while people in wealthy societies will probably balk at the thought of building houses made out of tires and bottles, I love the fact that these buildings answer an immediate need, use readily available materials, come with a very affordable price tag and allow the people of Haiti to build/provide for themselves without depending on foreign aid. Beautiful.
This article also made me think of a great documentary I saw a few weeks ago called Citizen Architect that tells a somewhat similar story set in our own backyard. The film revolves around a man named Samuel Mockbee who was an architect and the founder of Auburn University’s Rural Studio. Similar to the Haiti earthships, the Rural Studio is an architecture program where students design and build projects for impoverished individuals and communities in rural Alabama. Great movie, but I wouldn’t recommend seeing it if you are unprepared to have your entire way of life challenged.
Both the Haiti example and the Rural Studio serve to remind us that good architecture (or urban planning, or real estate development etc) doesn’t have to be landmark buildings designed for the rich and famous. Rather, good architecture takes into account people’s actual needs and resources and in turn designs places that serve their inhabitants and actually and improve their quality of life. Even if that means making houses out of tires.

A Piece of Architecture: Haiti's Gingerbread Houses

Why a link on the Victorian Architecture of Port au Prince, Haiti? Well, It a piece on Architecture, and I love puns. Looking at these old 'Grandes Dames' of the Caribbean in their steamy setting warms the bones of this old mason on the chilly first day of December. Besides, there is perhaps no other country in the New World which has played as significant a role in the development of Freemasonry in the Americas as had Haiti, and Port au Prince is its capital. The love of architecture and Masonry should go hand in hand. I was in love with the former before I was old enough to be aware of the latter. As both masons and humans, we should all remember the Haitians and redouble our concern and support for them as the world and its humanitarian donors seem ready to allow this fierce and beautiful country to be forgotten again
